rob's wine style
complexity, maturity & balance
Rob started out as a Maths & Science teacher and wondered if he would be more patient with wine than he would be with high school students.
He was correct. He was.
And that is key to how Rob has made wines over the past 50-odd years: he won't be hurried, his intent is always for a balanced, beautiful and 'comfortable' wine for his wine drinkers.
Very traditional in many ways is his winemaking, and while Rob wouldn't brand it as such, there's probably something quite unique about each of his wines.
The Somerled Shiraz is so impressive, in the Penfolds Grange style and sometimes rated as potentially superior - but Rob keeps it in barrel for longer than he did with the Grange, and every few months pumps the wine from barrel to tank to barrel again - to make this wine the complex, intriguing and complete wine that it is, even before bottle ageing starts.
Or how about his fine, dry, pale and beautiful rose - which indeed goes through the second malolactic fermentation (somewhat unheard of in a rose) giving it a surprisingly lush texture for such a bone dry wine!
Each and every one of his wines reflects his personality: careful, studied, quietly creative and always thinking of others.
