Somerled 2017 Pinot Noir Rose: Pinot noir is a great variety from which to make rose style wines. It is a naturally low-colour and reasonably low-tannin variety, so providing the vineyard is nice and cool, the grapes are hand-picked and well looked after, and providing it’s handled gently in the winery, the juice is going to be pale and soft. Combine that with the elegant pinot noir flavour and aroma, and it’s a pretty good outcome. Our 2017 Rose is a great example of the above – it’s pale and dry and wonderfully soft and lingering. After the initial fermentation, we put the wine through malolactic fermentation, and this enhances the pinot noir flavour and aroma, and provides an extra velvety softness to the palate. It is a more than adequate follow-on to the trophy-winning 2016. It’s not a wine to cellar for a long period. We love it as a wine with lunch – the longer the better – as a pre-dinner aperitif and with most “not too rich” dishes – and even with a quince clafoutis! Rob Moody
