Happy International Chardonnay Day!

Wine / Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024

I was all set with a different blog topic today, but then it occurred to me that it’s International Chardonnay Day! Today!

And, although we’ve been talking a lot about it lately (with the recent bottling and pre-release sale of our 2023 Chardonnay) I couldn’t let the day pass unnoticed.

But what more can I say that hasn’t already been said

Not much as it turns out!

So, I ‘ve gathered together some resources for you to do your own deep dive into the world of Chardonnay.

First, some past blogs…

Here is one from last year, where I make the day all about Heather (seeing it’s her birthday on the 27th May and Chardonnay is her favourite variety). We chat about what it’s like the be the wife of a winemaker and what she likes to eat with her Chardonnay.

And one from the year before, where I chat about the history of Chardonnay in Australia.

Next I have a 15 minute video…

From a collection of brilliant resources that Wine Australia have made available.

The video provides a great summary of the evolution of Australian Chardonnay and the major regions where it is grown. Wine Australia’s Mark Davidson chats with Giant Steps’ Consulting Winemaker Steve Flamsteed about regionally distinctive Chardonnays and why Yarra Valley is such an exciting region for Chardonnay (the Adelaide Hills is a good spot for it too! But sometimes it’s nice to recognise that others do good things as well).

Followed by, a Quiz!

I know how much you love a quiz (or is that just me?!). Again, thanks to Wine Australia, you can test your Chardonnay knowledge by taking this quiz.

It’s anonymous, but feel free to let me know how you went in the comments below. And don’t worry, I didn’t get 100%, so there will be no judgement here!

And finally, a Chardonnay Special (for our club members)…

If you’re a Jockey Club member, check you inbox for a super special deal on our brand new yet to be released to the general public 2023 Chardonnay.

Unless you customised your pack, you would have received a bottle of this in your May Club pack.

If you’ve already sampled and enjoyed it, then here is your chance to stock up at extra special prices (the “Large” pack is priced at double your regular club discount!)

And if you need any further encouragement, here are Rob’s tasting notes on the wine that he say is his favourite vintage since 2012!

What a standout. The malolactic fermentation in this wine is a touch more restrained than in the 2022 (current) vintage.

The MLF is already showing beautiful integration with the elegance of fresh white peaches, a hint of citrus peel, the sophistication of the Tremaux oak (setting it apart from the 2022 which used the delicious Chassin oak) and the full palate having a significant impact!

I love the lingering characters of this wine, it goes on for a good while on the palate, and that mouthful really is a surprise after the very restrained nose. I’m not sure why that is, and it’s nice that our wines can still keep us entertained with what they do. Cellar half of this and drink the rest now in fabulous company, as this wine is a winner! Rob.

Thanks, Rob… don’t mind if I do!
